purns:tanya77:zadi:The Jazz Loft Project. Over 40,000 photos and 4,000 hours of recordings by Eugene Smith, from 821 Sixth Avenue in New York City. The late night haunt of jazz greats like Charles Mingus, Zoot Sims, Bill Evans, and Thelonius Monk. I was checking this out earlier today and then one thing led to another until I found about 40 videos of my grandfather, now dead for over 9 years, playing with the big band he joined when he moved to Stockholm a year or so before I was born. He was lead trumpet for Duke Ellington for most of the time this loft thing was going on, so I doubt he spent any meaningful time here, but I presume he would have passed through at least a couple of times. I only got to see him play once in the States, and that was when I was about 7. Some of these videos are actually from those shows. Thanks, Internet.  *swoons*
