SUP, LAUREN?! Good question. I’ve probably yapped about this before, but that’s never stopped me.
Personally, I think “She’s Always in My Hair” is one of Prince’s best, most underrated songs. The first time I heard it, and this is a true story with no hyperbole, I almost threw up. Something unraveled inside of my young body and I’ve yet to ever feel that feeling again, so I know it was something special and not a bad case of indigestion or some dumbass shit. I had a similar but not the same experience the first time I realized I didn’t HAVE to be a Christian just because I was raised as one; I could worship any God I wanted and the “real” God of my dreams would never be upset about my doubts or questions or visual interpretation of what he/she looked like. That is to say, I can easily compare how I felt when first listening to “She’s Always in My Hair” with how I feel when I think about God. That is really fucking intense and I’m sorry if that turned any of you off or creeped you out, it’s the God’s honest truth and that’s that.
Besides the beat being trademark simple funk with crazy, wailing guitar work, the song matter itself is very “Prince”-esque. It’s about a girl, Prince’s girl, being so goddamned in love with him that he has essentially turned ambivalent about their relationship, insinuating she’s a good woman but perhaps that level of dedication bothers Prince, or at the very least bores him. The title of the song is also the chorus; “she’s always in my hair” can really only be interpreted as “this bitch is always in my face annoying me”. You can swap “annoying” for loving or caring for or whatever, but the sentiment is the same. “Maybe I’ll marry her,” he says. “Maybe I won’t.”

Now, the “real” answer is Erotic City because JESUS FUCK WHOREFISTING that song is sheer simple funk sex everything. However, if we’re talking “lesser known” Prince, “She’s Always in My Hair” is MOST DEFINITELY my favorite.
